On a snowy night in a small Canadian town, Paul (Peter Outerbridge) has just closed up his bar when a young man named Steve (RJ Mitte) walks in the door – carrying a lot of baggage. The shared history between the two results in significant tension before Steve says he’s got a hell of a story to tell. It’s about another bar, The Oak Room, another snowy night, and another bartender visited after hours, this time by a stranger. There’s a story within that story as well… and as each mini-narrative unfolds, it brings Paul and Steve closer to a truth that will have severe and permanent consequences.
THE OAK ROOM is a very different project from director Cody Calahan (ANTISOCIAL, Fantasia 2013) and his fellow horror specialists at Black Fawn Films. Scripted by Peter Genoway from his play, it builds tension through dialogue, character nuances and well-timed revelations rather than otherworldly forces, explicit villainy or bloodshed. From its lengthy opening scene, THE OAK ROOM is both an engrossing neo-noir and a meditation on the nature of storytelling, and how we shape the personal narratives we reveal to others – or as Paul puts it, “goosing the truth.” Mitte (Walter White Jr. on BREAKING BAD) and veteran actor Outerbridge engage in a riveting spoken pas de deux before the film begins jumping to past events and memories. By the time they all tie together at the startling finale, you realize you yourself have spent 90 minutes in the grip of a couple of accomplished cinematic storytellers. – Michael Gingold
