In a country village, Soo-hyuk, a primary-school teacher adored by his pupils, and his wife, the sweet and shy Yi-young, seem to be the ideal couple. However, the latter is afflicted with a strange evil. At nightfall, her personality changes dramatically, as if she were possessed, and in the morning she becomes the young woman everyone loves again. When one of the curious villagers comes across a Yi-young in judoka mode, the community, frightened by her unpredictability, decides to build a cage for her in the attic of her house. Unfortunately, this idea quickly turns to tragedy. Detective Hyung-gu arrives in the village to investigate the fire that claimed the couple’s life. Although the case seems complex, the policeman can't anticipate what awaits him there. He might even come to wonder if he’s really himself...
A thriller tinged with mystery, as well as a subtly philosophical drama, ME AND ME offers a fascinating story that constantly surprises with its many surreal twists and turns. The prolific actor Jung Jin-young (THE KING AND DE CLOWN) gets behind the camera with this daring first work, both in terms of direction and script, which he wrote himself. The excellent Cho Jin-woong (A HARD DAY) proves to be extremely convincing in a complex role that required an actor at the top of his art to transpose the psychological spiral into which Hyung-gu sinks with such brilliance. Sometimes funny, sometimes frightening, but always surprising, ME AND ME respects the intelligence of its audience by allowing the spectator to bring their own answers to the mystery surrounding this spellbinding story, where dream and reality intertwine. You may well ask yourself some existential questions afterwards. Translation: Rupert Bottenberg
