Lorry Kikta, FILM THREAT

“Quirky, bonkers energy… plays out like a Frankensteined neo-noir thriller and horror-comedy.”
Hoai-Tran Bui, SLASHFILM

“Dark humor at its best, with plenty of violence and unexpected moments of levity to tie into a quirky, entertaining knot.”
Kristy Strouse, FILM INQUIRY

It’s the late ‘90s. Arkansas. Nurse Mandy (MAY’s Angela Bettis) is staring down a double shift at a hospital she’d rather be nowhere near. But she needs to go in. For one, because she’s an addict, and the extra pay will go a long way. More importantly, she needs to go because it’s the hospital work that funds her habit – largely via an organ harvesting side-gig that she’s managed to carve out for herself. Tonight will be especially taxing for her. Because people are complicated. And she’s going to be stuck dealing with many of them. Situations will spiral out of control through an ascension of grisly happenings, unfortunate twists of fate, and terrible, terrible choices.

Writer/director Brea Grant (who also scripted and stars in this year’s LUCKY) has long been a talent to watch, as an actor in such works as AFTER MIDNIGHT and Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN II, and as a storyteller with her acclaimed 2013 debut BEST FRIENDS FOREVER and her work as a writer/director on the Emmy-nominated LGBTQ series EASTSIDERS. With this gripping sophomore feature, 2020 is the year that Grant has become a full-on superforce. While set almost entirely within a hospital, 12 HOUR SHIFT beautifully evokes a small-town sense of honest, lived-in familiarity. By taking place at the onset of the U.S. opioid crisis, the film echoes with a tragic sense of doomed destiny, made all the more compelling by way of its peripheral cast of textured, flawed characters, many dealing with their own traumas – contrasting against disarmingly kookier, more stylized personalities. Angela Bettis, always strong, has never been better than she is here, playing a ferociously uncommon kind of anti-hero that the screen desperately needs to see more of. Behind the lens, Grant percolates her film with inspired directorial details and a dark sense of humour that never fails to land. Featuring a supporting cast that includes Chloe Farnworth, David Arquette and Mick Foley, 12 HOUR SHIFT is a compelling crime film creation that no amount of PPE can restrain. – Mitch Davis
